THE TEXAS SAPPHIRES
RELEASE DEBUT CD
VALLEY SO STEEP
AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Sapphires, just named Austin Music Awards' Best New Band, marks the release of its debut CD of alt-country-hillbilly-bluegrass tunes with a party at 9 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Threadgill's World Headquarters, 301 W. Riverside Drive. Cover is $5; information: 512.451.5440.
VALLEY SO STEEP (Lowe Farm Records; street date: April 18, 2006), which was produced by and features Grammy Award-winning producer Lloyd Maines, is a collection of 12 alt-country-rock tunes, 11 written by front man Billy Brent Malkus plus a cover of "Las Vegas" by the legendary Gram Parsons.
The band will also celebrate its win as Best New Band at the 2006 Austin Music Awards on March 15; readers of The Austin Chronicle vote annually on their favorites. "This totally took us by surprise, but the surprise was exceedingly pleasant nonetheless," says Malkus. "We have awesome fans to whom we owe our deepest thanks and a commitment to continue kicking out the hardcore country jams. We are deeply honored and humbled."
The Texas Sapphires are songwriter-lead vocalist-instrumentalist Billy Brent Malkus; co-lead vocalist Rebecca Lucille Cannon; Brother Paul Schroeder on mandolin, banjo and vocals; Jeff Joiner on bass guitar and vocals; and Ram Zimmerman on drums. When the band performs live, it adds to its roster with instrumentalists that include pedal steel players Kim Deschamps and Nathan Fleming and fiddler Warren Hood.
"The Texas Sapphires are a breath of fresh air in the boiling pot of new music in the country today," says producer Maines." ...inspired songs, great vocals and diverse band members that toss their respective musical influences into the ring... The end result is a great listen."
The band will tour Texas, opening for musical icon Dwight Yoakum as it has for Ray Price and Peter Rowan. Upcoming Texas Sapphires shows include:
