AWARD-WINNING ANIMATED SHORT FILM
‘THE TOLL’ TO SCREEN AT SXSW FILM FESTIVAL
7-Minute Mock-umentary Exposes 100-Year-Old Troll,
Represents Creator-Studio’s High-Def Genius
AUSTIN, Texas — The six-time award-winning animated short film “The Toll,” a mock-umentary exposing the false mask of bravado worn by a bony blue troll that lives under a bridge, will screen twice during South by Southwest Film Festival 2007.
Writer-director Zack Pike and Producer Marc Dole will be at the first screening of “The Toll” at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, 1120 S. Lamar Blvd.; information: 512.912.0529. A Q&A session will follow. A second screening is set for 11:15 a.m. Thursday, March 15, at the same theater.
“The Toll,” which has was been screened at more than 30 international film festivals since July 2006 and has won four Best Of Animation awards, one Best Comedy and one Best Animation runner up, will screen at SXSW and five other festivals the weekend of March 9, at locations in the United States, Canada and Europe: from CineQuest in San Jose, Calif., and DC International Film Festival in Washington to World of Comedy in Toronto and Festival BIMINI of Animation in Riga, Latvia.
“The Toll” is a computer-animated mock-umentary featuring a troll unburdening himself with comments on work, life and love that range from somewhat inappropriate to outrageously delusional. “Everything in ‘The Toll’ is about façades,” says Pike. “I think it’s resonating with audiences because deep down, we all know what it’s like to try to wear a mask, and to wish the mask was real. That, and it’s really funny.”
Dole, founder of Hatchling Studios, says the short film was created as “a calling card” for the studio and that it’s brought commercial work with Charmin, Reebok, PCConnection, NASCAR, Prudential Securities and Fisher-Price, development deals with major networks, and an animated pilot at MTV.
Hatchling is in the process of developing a feature film based on “The Toll” and a TV series. The full-service digital content company founded in 1999 providing cutting-edge 2D and 3D animation has 40 projects in various stages of development in media including feature and short films, Internet design, Web application development, mobile content, television, direct–to-video and Web-isodes. “The Toll” was created in Softimage XSI, Digital Fusion 4 and After Effects with additional modeling and effects in Lightwave 8. The short was created on 1Beyond workstations and rendered on Angstrom AMD Blade Servers. The film is rendered at 1080p HD resolution.
