FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sir Peter Stothard, Times Literary Supplement Editor
and ‘Thirty Days’ Author,
to Speak at 2005 Texas Book Festival

(Austin, TX) — Sir Peter Stothard, author and editor of Times Literary Supplement, the leading international journal of literary criticism and ideas, will attend the 10th annual Texas Book Festival in Austin and speak on the relationships between British Prime Minister Tony Blair and President George Bush immediately proceeding the Iraqi War.

His talk is scheduled for 2:45-3:30 p.m. Sunday, October 30, in the Senate Chamber of the Texas State Capitol during the weekend-long festival on the Capitol grounds. Stothard will sign copies of “Thirty Days: A Month at the Heart of Blair’s War” immediately afterward in the Book Signing Tent.

Stothard wrote “Thirty Days” after spending a month shadowing Blair in the days before the Iraqi War, with him at Downing Street and at conferences at Camp David and in Northern Ireland and Brussels. Tina Brown at Salon.com described the book as “a Bob Woodwardian, up-close-and-personal diary of the scene at No. 10 Downing Street as Blair and his inner circle prepared for the war with Iraq,” and Hasan Suroor of India’s The Hindu said, “He does what is so rare in this age of opinionated journalism: He simply reports what he sees … a parallel universe where normality has an altogether different meaning.”

For 10 years, from 1992 to 2002, Stothard was editor of The Times of London and before that its U.S. editor. He writes on British and American politics and ancient history and literature for such newspapers as The Wall Street Journal and travels frequently to the United States. He is an honorary fellow of Oxford’s Trinity College, where he was a Greek and Latin scholar from 1969 to 1973. He was knighted in 2003 for services to the newspaper industry.

In addition to his book festival appearance, Stothard will host an invitation-only reception for regional subscribers to the Times Literary Supplement and other guests.

This year’s Texas Book Festival, marking its 10th anniversary with a “celebration of words” theme, will be held October 28-30 at the State Capitol in Austin. The popular panel discussions, author readings and book signings, and live music are set along with children’s activities, art activities, cooking demonstrations and more. The festival is free and benefits the public libraries of Texas. For more information, visit www.texasbookfestival.org.
