COMPUTER GAMERS DOC SECOND SKIN
TO SCREEN AT TORONTO, BOSTON FILM FESTS
SXSW Premiere Garnering Great Reviews;
Variety Calls Dramas Portrayed ‘Fascinating’
Austin, TX — Pure West Films’ Second Skin, the first feature-length documentary on Massively Multiplayer Online games and the individuals transformed by the virtual worlds they create, which premiered at South By Southwest Film Festival 2008, will screen next month at prestigious film festivals in both Toronto and Boston, the New York production company has announced.
Second Skin, whose first two screenings at SXSW Film Festival sold out the 500-plus-seat theater and virtually filled it a third time, balances science, sociology and stunning factoids (more than 50 million people worldwide play MMOs). But “… the human dramas of individual gamers are what really make this technically polished docu so fascinating and potentially commercial,” wrote Joe Leydon in Variety.
In Toronto, the documentary — described as perhaps “the most accurate and entertaining glimpse of the economy and psychology of technology since ‘Tron’ ” by The Austin Chronicle — will screen at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival at 7:15 p.m. Monday, April 21, in the ROM Theatre and at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, in the Bader Theatre.
In Boston, Second Skin — called “wildly entertaining but also manages to be informative and worthy of contemplation of where our society (or a portion of it) is headed” in the online Ain’t It Cool News — will screen during the Independent Film Festival of Boston: at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, and 6:45 p.m. Friday, April 25, both in the Somerville Theatre at Davis Square.
Pure West Films is also screening the documentary — described by The Hollywood Reporter as “a fascinating film … gets audiences who’ve never considered spending 18 hours in front of their computer to sympathize with those who do” — for colleges that contact the company at info@purewestmedia.com
