RUBY DEE AND THE SNAKEHANDLERS
COMING TO AUSTIN IN MID-MARCH ON WESTERN U.S. TOUR

4 Area Appearances Include Antone's Records, Ego's,
Patsy's Cowgirl Café, Manor's The Oaks Live

Austin, TX -- Alt-country combo Ruby Dee and The Snakehandlers, whose music encompasses honky-tonk, rockabilly and rock 'n' roll in clever original songs and tight instrumentation, stops in Austin in mid-March for four area appearances as the band begins a tour of the American West ahead of a new album now slated for release by Dionysus Records in May.

Ruby Dee and The Snakehandlers play at 9 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at Ego's, 510 S. Congress Ave. in Austin. Tickets are $5; club information: 512.474.7091. Also on the bill: Rick Broussard's Two Hoots and a Holler. Earlier Thursday, they play a free show at Antone's Record Shop, 2928 Guadalupe St., at 1:30pm.

The band -- led by beautifully flamboyant front woman, songwriter and lead vocalist Ruby Dee Philippa and guitarist Jorge Harada -- also plays at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Patsy's Cowgirl Café, 5001 E. Ben White Blvd. (tickets $5, information: 512.320.0553) and a free show at noon Sunday, March 16, at The Oaks Live, 10206 F.M. 973 North in Manor (information: 512.278.8788). The Hacienda Brothers, James Intveldt and Ricky Broussard are among others acts scheduled to perform.

On Sunday, the band plays an early Happy Hour gig at Sam's Burger Joint in San Antonio and another show early Monday evening in San Angelo before heading west.

"We just love to dance and sing and get wild at our shows," Ruby told a Tulsa World writer early this winter. "Some bands don't really engage their audiences much, but we dance around and have a good time."

With a reputation for high-energy shows that now precedes it, the band's swing out West, all the way to San Francisco, will prime its ever-growing fan base for a CD release show and radio tour behind the new full-length recording of original tunes, called MILES FROM HOME, its fourth album, second with producer Conrad Uno and the first to include song lyrics along with the CD.

Two of Ruby's songs for the new CD, the fast-paced rockabilly "I Don't Need a Man" and the melancholy but beautiful love song "Round and Round," are already being demanded by fans at live shows. Another, "Cold Pines & Red Dirt," earned second-place honors in Songwriter magazine's recent competition. It reflects a new depth and more maturity in her writing and what Ruby calls "a more masterful approach by Harada with his guitar and the spaces in between."

The Snakehandlers will return to Europe again for another whirlwind tour later this year and one through the Southwest to San Francisco in August in support of the release. The band is set to move to Austin at the end of the year: a return to Texas for Ruby, who grew up driving the long, straight roads around Big Spring. She and Harada continue to work on new tunes.
