RECKLESS KELLY TO PLAY
2-NIGHT STAND AT GRUENE HALL
ARMED WITH NEW ALBUM, BULLETPROOF

New Release: Love Songs & Road Anthems Locked, Loaded and Unleashed

Austin, TX — Roots rockers Reckless Kelly play a two-night stand in early August at the historical dance hall in New Braunfels as they tour behind the release of their seventh album, the high-caliber, spirited BULLETPROOF (Yep Roc Records; June 24), which has already reached #7 on the Americana radio airplay chart.

Reckless Kelly plays at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, August 1, and at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, August 2, at Gruene Hall, 1601 Hunter Road. Tickets are $22; they go on sale July 1. Information: 210.629.5077, www.gruenehall.com. Bluesy singer Paula Nelson and her Paula Nelson Band open at 8 p.m. on Friday and 9 p.m. Saturday.

For BULLETPROOF, the band — lead singer Willy Braun, brother Cody (fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, vocals), lead guitarist David Abeyta, bassist Jimmy McFeeley and drummer Jay Nazz — “takes lively Southern rock twists and sets songs in wide open spaces that aren’t concerned with genre restrictions,” says the Houston Chronicle in last week’s issue.

The album “… veers smoothly between dusty road songs and twangy ballads,” the Chronicle says, with “the band’s tight, effortless chemistry anchored by [Cody] Braun’s expert string work and David Abeyta’s emotive guitar playing.”

Disc standouts, it says, are “Love in Her Eyes,” which “has an ’80s bent, like a revved-up Bryan Adams”; the wistful, warm “Mirage” and “Don’t Say Goodbye”; and “God Forsaken Town,” in which Willy Braun, the band’s principal songwriter, paints with co-writer and fellow Texan Robert Earl Keen “a painful picture” of post-Katrina New Orleans with “a rich poignancy” from “the blend of lyrics and gorgeous instrumentation.”

As the summer gets hotter, so does Reckless Kelly’s schedule of tour dates behind the BULLETPROOF release. After shows across Texas and the country, the band appears with label-mates Reverend Horton Heat this fall from Florida to New York City.
