ROOTS ROCKERS RECKLESS KELLY TAKING AIM AT CHARLOTTE WITH BULLETPROOF PRE-RELEASE TOUR
Band on National Tour Ahead of June Release
Austin, TX -- Roots rockers Reckless Kelly, whose forthcoming album presents a little more rock than roots this time, is previewing cuts from the release, BULLETPROOF (Yep Roc Records; street date: June 24, 2008), as it tours the country -- making a stop later this month in Charlotte.
Reckless Kelly plays at 9 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Neighborhood Theatre, 511 E. 36th St. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door; information: 704.358.9298. Doors open at 8 p.m.; no reserved seating. The dance floor will be open for stomping, swinging and shimmying.
Fans across the nation, including in Atlanta and Chicago, will have to wait a while longer for BULLETPROOF -- self-produced by the band, engineered by John Smerek and recorded at Pedernales Studios outside Austin. The album's title track and the recording were so named to honor the spirit of the 1870s Australian gangster/folk hero Ned Kelly, who lent his name to and continues to inspire the band.
On the first studio album released by the band since 2006's hugely popular three-disk RECKLESS KELLY WAS HERE (and its seventh overall), it powers up distinct rock energy, a Skynyrd-inspired Southern guitar sound that member Cody Braun describes as a "high-energy kind of rock 'n' roll with a fiddle. ... There [aren't] any teddy bears or roses onstage."
Notable tracks on BULLETPROOF include "Godforsaken Town," co-written by Robert Earl Keen, about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, as well as up-tempo rockers "Passin' Through" by principal songwriter Willy Braun and "Ragged as the Road I'm On."
During SXSW Music Festival, Reckless Kelly -- lead singer Willy Braun, brother Cody (fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, vocals), lead guitarist David Abeyta, bassist Jimmy McFeeley and drummer Jay Nazz -- played both the BMI Showcase at Austin Music Hall and the Yep Roc Day Party, was interviewed in Studio SX (posted at www.sxsw.com) and on radio, and taped a video blog for CMT.com.
Reckless Kelly is preparing for the release, with tour dates slated from North Carolina to Chicago to Idaho to Mexico.
