SINGER-SONGWRITER PAULA NELSON TO PLAY NASHVILLE
Daughter of Country Music Legend Brings Her Texas Blues-Country Hybrid
to Music City for Rare Appearances
AUSTIN, Texas — Soulful, sultry singer-songwriter Paula Nelson and her band will play an industry showcase in Nashville in November and join Billy Block’s show with the one-of-a-kind country- and blues-tinged rock sound that’s captured on their latest album, the solid LUCKY 13 (Pedernales Records; February 2008).
Nelson and the band play an industry showcase at 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 19, at 3rd & Lindsley, 818 3rd Ave. South. Cover is $5; Information: 615.259.9891. Also on the bill: The Wooten Brothers.
The previous evening, Tuesday, November 18, they play at 7 p.m. as part of the weekly “Billy Block Show” at Cadillac Ranch, 305 Broadway. Cover is $5; information: 615.742.9078.
Nelson — called “a golden-haired spitfire with a voice bearing the edge of a life lived hard” by the Chicago Tribune when she and the band played there in September — was recently seen on the BMI Stage at Austin City Limits Music Festival.
Said the Minneapolis Star-Tribune: “Paula Nelson has done an admirable job of not riding her famous father Willie’s coattails (or ponytails?) and making her own go of it … Part of her success has come from echoing other Texas legends — including Lou Ann Barton, Marcia Ball and Janis Joplin — more than her honky-tonking dad, resulting in a rollicking boogie-woogie and soulful blues-rock mix on her new CD, LUCKY 13.”
Backed by a guitar-driven Southern rock sound, the singer-songwriter with alto-to-soprano lead vocals, strong keyboards learned at her aunt’s knee, and writing depth and breadth brought together jazzy rockers, seductive love songs and ballads like the elegant “Day to Day Love” (which features her father, Willie, and brother, Luke Nelson).
Onstage with Nelson — also a martial-arts master, stunt woman and stunt driver, and actress (her first movie, “Conflict of Interest,” due for release next year) — is a quartet of players she also calls her best friends: well-known Austin vocalist-guitarist George Devore, guitarist Landis Armstrong, drummer Kevin Remme and bassist Chris Johnson.
Interview times are available as well as press kits and review CDs.
