BLUESY SINGER-SONGWRITER PAULA NELSON
DEALS A GREAT HAND WITH NEW ALBUM, LUCKY 13,
DUE FEBRUARY 26
KGSR Live Broadcast at Saxon Pub, Opening at Backyard for Willie
Among Shows Marking Release of Strong, Sexy CD
AUSTIN, Texas — Paula Nelson, bluesy singer-songwriter backed by a guitar-driven Southern rock sound, is counting down to her LUCKY 13, a compelling collection of jazzy rockers, ballads and seductive love songs slated for release February 26 on Pedernales Records.
Nelson is scheduled to mark the release with a special show with Texas rocker Joe Ely on Friday, February 29, at Saxon Pub (where she plays most Wednesday nights), which will be broadcast live during 107.1 KGSR-Radio Austin’s “Lone Star State of Mind” program. At 5 p.m. the day before, Thursday, February 28, she’ll make an in-store appearance at Austin’s Waterloo Records & Video.
Other special record release shows are set for Friday and Saturday nights, March 14-15, at The Backyard, when she and the Paula Nelson Band open for Willie Nelson, and 1-5 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels.
LUCKY 13 — produced by Matt Hubbard and Paula Nelson, engineered by Sam Siefert, and recorded at Ray Benson’s Bismeaux Studios in Austin — features Nelson’s supple alto-to-soprano vocal range, strong-to-soft emotional depth and songwriting breadth in songs like the steamy “Fire Below,” the tough anthem “Baby You’re Mean” and the elegant ballad “Day to Day Love,” which is unmistakably touched by Willie Nelson and Luke Nelson (on vocals and guitars) and Austin’s Tosca String Quartet.
Two of the songs on the album — “Easy Money” and “Jackson” — were recorded live in the simulated Wild West town of Luck, Texas. “Jackson” and “Angel from Montgomery” are extraordinary covers of favorite songs of Nelson’s.
Backing Paula (and lead vocals Texas Monthly called “torchy” as well as her dexterous keyboard work) are George Devore on acoustic guitar and vocals, Landis Armstrong on electric guitar and vocals, Hubbard on keyboards and harmonica and vocals, Chris Johnson on bass, and Kevin Remme on drums and vocals.
Nelson — whose right shoulder bears the tattoo duplicated on the LUCKY 13 cover — grew up in the aura of her outlaw-country music-making father and his compadres, influenced by the vocals of such models as Rita Coolidge and the caring encouragement of Austin club owner Clifford Antone. In the early 1990s, she was performing all over Austin. She’s appeared with her father often, including the Farm Aid concerts in Fort Worth and in 2007 in New York City.
The new album release tour will take Nelson across Texas from Alpine to Odessa and Luckenbach to Fort Worth — but most Wednesday nights will find her onstage at Austin landmark Saxon Pub.
