POP ROCKERS nelo TO PLAY BACK-TO-SCHOOL GIG
AT ANTONE’S ON SEPTEMBER 8

Show One of 4 Opportunities to See Band
Locally Before its East Coast Tour

Group Wins 1st Round of Voting
in Austin City Limits Music Festival Battle of the Bands

AUSTIN, Texas — Six-piece pop-rock combo nelo (rhymes with “hello”) plays a back-to-school party show for area students and its growing base of avid fans early in September at Antone’s, as one of four special local appearances.

nelo plays at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, September 8, at Antone’s, 213 W. Fifth St. in Austin. Cover is $15; information: 512.320.8424. Before that, nelo takes to the KGSR Stage at Austin’s annual Batfest!, on Sunday, September 2, on the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge.

After the back-to-school show, nelo performs a rare weeknight all-acoustic show in front of a more intimate audience on Monday, September 10, at Saxon Pub, 1320 S. Lamar Blvd. The club is for music lovers 21 and older.

And then the band plays a free show at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 14, at Austin’s City Hall Plaza. In October, nelo will be touring the East, including stops in Nashville and at Duke University in Durham, N.C.

Meanwhile, nelo has finished #1 in the first round of voting in the ACL Music Festival’s “The Sound and the Jury” online battle of the bands. The winning band earns a slot during the world-famous festival September 12-14. nelo fans voted daily for their favorite group 6,144 times, more than 1,250 votes ahead of the nearest competitor. Semi-finalist voting begins August 24 at www.aclfestival.com.

nelo packs its live shows with a combination of original pop-rock songs and powerful condensed jams. It was born when Matt Ragland, songwriter and acoustic guitarist, started writing songs in Austin, where he attended The University of Texas with singer Reid Umstattd. Ragland formed a band, mostly of musician friends from high school, and moved to Athens, Ga. After playing there for little more than a year and building fans, nelo moved back to Austin to play for its growing Texas high-school and college-age audiences and started recording its debut album, slated for release February 2008 on Pedernales Records.

Prior to joining nelo, Chris Hill (drums, percussion), Stephen Goodson (electric guitar), David Long (tenor & soprano sax, flute) and Mike St. Clair (bass, trombone) all attended the University of North Texas, where they studied jazz.

nelo is also taking its music to the Southwest with its first tour of Arizona this month, including an August 24 on “Good Morning! Arizona,” the #1 independent morning TV show in the country.
