AUSTIN’S FAMED BAD GIRL
JO CAROL PIERCE RELEASES DOG OF LOVE

Local Cult Favorite Playing Austin Shows Behind Album, Her First in 11 Years

AUSTIN, Texas — Writer-performer Jo Carol Pierce, whose postmodern folk songs have charmed audiences from here to Washington’s Kennedy Center, on Tuesday released DOG OF LOVE, her first album since 1996, and is marking the occasion with a pack of CD release shows (three during South By Southwest Music Festival 2008) in support of the recording.

For DOG OF LOVE, Pierce teamed her piano and her shimmying vocals with best friend-guitarist-songwriter David Halley, guitarist-producer Mark Andes, guitarist Burnin’ Mike Vernon, multi-instrumentalist Blackie White, drummer Bruce Logan and vocalist Blessed Virgin Mary Welch.

The result captures Pierce’s unconventional wisdom and indomitable spirit: “The new album … is like a miracle — an immaculate conception, a resurrection. … Even Pierce devotees will be surprised at how musically rich the song cycle is — as well as, no surprise, lyrically inspired. … Pierce never sounded more melodically and vocally assured. … For fans, this is holy communion, while initiates can receive their baptism,” wrote Don McLeese in the March-April 2008 No Depression.

DOG OF LOVE is jammed with songs about crazy love, wicked heartbreak, fervent feeling and illogical truth: the rock ’n’ roll guitar-driven “Rock in My Shoe,” the snarly “Dog of Love,” the haunting poetic ballad “You’re So True” and the honorific “Barb Wire Crown.”

Pierce and her band are scheduled to play half a dozen shows in Austin to mark the release, shows that fire up writers such as Stephen MacMillan Moser of The Austin Chronicle, who, after one show, called Pierce “a tumbleweed angel. … The sound rose from the ground like floodwaters around my ankles, and I just went limp, and the music swirled around me and washed my sins away. Jo Carol is Kitty Wells, she is the B-52s, she is Lucinda Williams, she is Patti Smith. But then again, she's unlike anyone else you've ever heard. …”

Pierce and her band play a free show at 8 p.m. tonight, March 5, at Chain Drive.

During SXSW Music 2008, they play at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at Opal Divine’s-Penn Field, 3601 S. Congress Ave, during the NSXSW Third Coast Music Day Party. On Friday, March 14, they perform twice: at 1 p.m. at Saxon Pub, during its No Cover Day Party, and at 10 p.m. at Evangeline Café in South Austin.

To wrap up the Austin shows, Pierce and the band play at 8 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Patsy’s Cowgirl Café and 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, during the free Happy Hour at Momo’s on Sixth Street.

Pierce’s last album was the 1996 recording of her critically acclaimed narrative musical, BAD GIRLS UPSET BY THE TRUTH, which featured “I Blame God,” “Borderline Tango” and “Loose Diamonds.” It was produced by the Alliance Theater in Atlanta and The American Musical Theater Festival in Philadelphia and made many year’s-best lists.
