TEXAS
ORIGINAL JO CAROL PIERCE
Presents First Show of New Songs for ‘BAD GIRLS GETS
OLD’
Evening includes a rare performance of ‘BAD GIRLS
UPSET BY THE TRUTH’
(Austin, Texas) —
Screenwriter/monologist/performance
artist/songwriter Jo Carol Pierce presents a bevy of
new tunes written with David Halley for a developing
follow-up to Pierce’s 1996 critically acclaimed
narrative musical, BAD GIRLS UPSET BY THE TRUTH.
The
two-set show starts at 10 p.m. Friday, September 16,
at Evangeline’s Cafe, 8106 Brodie Lane. $7 tickets
will be available at the door. For information,
512.282.2586.
The
first set of the evening at Evangeline’s features
new tunes “Don’t Miss This,” “Dog of Love,” “Red
Delicious” and “I’ve Got Your Eyes,” which continue
in the spirit of BAD GIRLS UPSET BY THE TRUTH,
Pierce’s semi-autobiographical performance piece
drawn from her early absurdist musical comedy art.
The
second set of the evening will feature the original
BAD GIRLS UPSET BY THE TRUTH, including “I Blame
God,” the Tex-Mex “Borderline Tango” (Pierce says,
“real odd thing is that it’s a waltz”) and “Loose
Diamonds,” which includes a former boyfriend’s
lament, “You were like broken glass embedded in my
flesh.”
Pierce’s
songs, a blend of country and postmodern folk sung
in a conversational style, are steeped more in
theater than in any traditional musical idiom. The
tone of BAD
GIRLS UPSET BY THE TRUTH was set by her opening dedication: “I need to send
this song out to all you guys out in the world who
have not had the courtesy to fall in love with the
bad girls yet, because y’all really bother me —
although not as much as the ones who did.”
Joining Pierce at Evangeline’s Blackie White of
Cornell Hurd Band on bass; Burnin’ Mike Vernon of 3
Balls of Fire; Tyrant of Texas funk Mike Barfield,
formerly of the Hollisters, providing vocals; Mary
Welch of Los Curanderos on lead and harmony vocals;
and drummer Bruce Logan.
Pierce and company will continue to develop BAD
GIRLS GROW OLD for an early 2006 release with
ongoing 2 p.m. Sunday performances at Jovita’s, 1619
S. First St., starting September 18.
