AUSTIN MAYOR WILL WYNN
BACKS HEALTH ALLIANCE FOR AUSTIN MUSICIANS
WITH ANNOUNCEMENT OF SPECIAL DAY

Businesses Invited to be Part of ‘HAAM BENEFIT DAY’ in October

Austin, TX — On the eve of one of the world’s largest music conferences and festivals, Austin Mayor Will Wynn announced today that he will declare October 3, 2006, “HAAM Benefit Day” and will ask businesses across the city, small and large, to donate at least 5 percent of the day’s proceeds to Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM).

Wynn, a supporter of the Health Alliance since its start in spring 2005, made the “HAAM Benefit Day” announcement today at City Hall. For a year now, the innovative Health Alliance for Austin Musicians has been assisting the city’s uninsured and low-income professional musicians with primary health care, dental care and mental health counseling.

“HAAM has proven its success in its first year of services with more than 450 member musicians now receiving medical, dental and mental health-care services,” says Wynn. “We applaud our musicians for all they bring to our economy, and in return we need to show our support to the Health Alliance so it can continue to keep them healthy and able to do what they love.”

Local musicians will play at businesses that participate in “HAAM BENEFIT DAY” — for enjoyment and to thank them but also to increase awareness of the Health Alliance and the need to expand the services it provides and the number of members it can serve.

The Austin office of Time Warner Cable and local favorite Waterloo Records & Video have committed to participate in “HAAM Benefit Day.”

John T. Kunz of Waterloo Records says, “Everyone has enjoyed live music in Austin in one form or another. HAAM Benefit Day is an opportunity for all types of businesses to join in and make Austin a richer and healthier community.

Tom Greer, public affairs rep at Time Warner Cable, adds: “Musicians provide so much to the quality of life in Austin. HAAM Benefit DAY is a great way for businesses to show support for musicians and all they do to keep our local economy strong.”

The partnership of providers that debuted in mid-April 2005 is made up of SETON Healthcare Network, which provides low-cost primary health-care services with emphasis on wellness and prevention; St. David’s Community Health Foundation, which provides free basic and preventive dental care; and SIMS Foundation, which provides low-cost mental-health counseling.

In just one year, 450 of Austin’s hard-working musicians enrolled in Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. It earned a 96 percent approval rating from members for quality of care and services. Specific services delivered include 553 clinic visits, 337 dental visits and hundreds of counseling sessions set up through local therapists who charge reduced rates.
