HEALTH ALLIANCE FOR AUSTIN MUSICIANS
RELEASES 2006 ANNUAL REPORT,
2007 FORECAST
Service Capacity to Double This Year;
2nd HAAM Benefit Day Set for October 2
Austin, TX – Health Alliance for Austin Musicians today marked its second anniversary with a City Hall press conference and the release of its 2006 Annual Report that shows services rendered to 667 member-musicians, and announced October 2 as the second HAAM Benefit Day.
Austin Mayor Will Wynn, representatives of the HAAM service providers (Seton Family of Hospitals, St. David’s Community Health Foundation Leadership and The SIMS Foundation), HAAM member-musicians, and business leaders and owners heard that HAAM member-musicians (66 percent are under 40) received almost 2,800 dental, primary medical care and mental-health sessions during 2006 and that services earned a 94 percent approval rating for quality of care.
“Austin can be very proud of what Health Alliance for Austin Musicians accomplished last year and the improvement of so many musicians’ lives in this city of music,” said Wynn. “We never dreamed HAAM would do so much so quickly. And the future looks even brighter.”
HAAM’s 2006 annual report (with its clever, oversized CD booklet design created and donated by GSD&M) shows that more than $225,000 in funds was raised through the giant success of the first HAAM Benefit Day, grants from Texas foundations and donations from individual community members. HAAM was embraced by the city as a worthy organization, and such support proves it is good business to take care of musicians’ health, especially in the “Live Music Capital of the World.”
Because of those funds, HAAM will be able to increase capacity in 2007 to 1,000 member-musicians, meaning more of Austin’s hard-working, low-income, uninsured professional music-makers can breathe easier when it comes to healthcare costs and concentrate on developing and sharing their talents with residents and visitors.
HAAM member-musician Jessie Lee Miller says, “I cannot express how much the services offered through the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians have helped me and fellow musicians. The organization has been a life saver for so many of us. Musicians work hard to maintain Austin’s reputation for live music, and HAAM makes us feel like a valued part of the community.”
For 2007, each of the HAAM providers has expanded services. The SIMS Foundation now provides outpatient rehab to HAAM member-musicians, Seton Family of Hospitals has opened a third clinic, Seton Topfer, to musicians, and St. David’s Community Health Foundation Leadership is providing musicians a half-day more services per week in addition to school vacations for dental services.
Finally, HAAM hopes to double business participation in HAAM Benefit Day 2007 slated for Tuesday, October 2. Tim Taylor, a partner at Jackson Walker LLP, will serve as chairman of this year’s HAAM Benefit Day Committee. Last year, 105 businesses across Austin donated 5 percent or more of the day’s proceeds, including $14,133 from presenting sponsor Whole Foods Market.
