ALT-COUNTRY QUARTET THE GOUGERS
RETURN TO HOUSTON TO PLAY McGONIGEL’S MUCKY DUCK
Band Touring Behind Smart, New Album:
A LONG DAY FOR THE WEATHERVANE
AUSTIN, Texas — Alt-country combo The Gougers (formerly The Sidehill Gougers) return to Houston almost two months after filling the house there for a CD release show for its latest recording, A LONG DAY FOR THE WEATHERVANE (The Weathervane Records; October 18).
The Gougers play at 8 p.m. Friday, December 7, at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck, 2425 Norfolk St. Cover is $15; information: 713.528.5999.
The Gougers bring to Houston fans cuts from A LONG DAY FOR THE WEATHERVANE, which currently stands at #27 on the Americana airplay chart. At the band’s live shows across Texas, the tracks are bringing down the house, too. The Austin Chronicle called its set at the inaugural Big State Festival two weeks ago the “best surprise of the weekend … with Jamie Wilson’s gentle twang matching Shane Walker’s darker sneer.”
It’s referring to the powerful combination of Wilson and Walker’s vocals as well as the duo’s songwriting prowess in intensely personal story-poems like the album’s “Everybody Knows,” “Michael” and “Manheim Station.” Backing Walker and Wilson are bass player Cody Foote and drummer/percussionist John Ross Silva.
The Austin American-Statesman said, “Evolution rarely rounds a corner as gracefully as it does on … WEATHERVANE. In fact, this new album … is a seamless transition from traditional folk to atmospheric roots rock. … ” The final eight minutes on the CD are described as “the loose, joyful jamboree that fans of the former Sidehill Gougers expect.”
The band played a Halloween night showcase at the The Mercy Lounge during the Americana Music Association Conference in Nashville and played a set at the Official AMA All-Day BBQ on November 3.
The Gougers upcoming shows include:
