ALT-COUNTRY QUARTET THE GOUGERS
PLAY MOMO’S AUSTIN SHOWCASE
Americana Band’s New Name, New Cuts, New Sound
Filling Venues as Texas Tour Continues
AUSTIN, Texas — Alt-country combo The Gougers (formerly The Sidehill Gougers) brings new material and fan favorites back to Austin next month when it plays the “Step Inside This House” Showcase at Momo’s.
The band, which dropped part of its name but gained a drummer and electric bass, has a case full of new songs that combine the socially insightful sensibility of folk (but without any pedagogic stodginess) and its new-found edgier, fuller sound that encompasses (as always) elements of country, rock and roots music.
The Gougers play at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, August 4, at Momo’s, 618 W. Sixth St., # 200. Cover is $8; information: 512.479.8848. The “Step Inside This House” Showcase is to also feature a song swap with by Greg Schroeder and Mike Ethan Messick 8 p.m., The Dedringers at 9, and Dustin Welch at midnight.
The band’s new recording, A LONG DAY FOR THE WEATHERVANE (for which a label is being sought), was produced by Texas singer-songwriter-guitarist Keith Gattis and features songs from The Gougers’ well-received EP, GONE TO SEED, and four more including the radio-ready “Everybody Knows” and “Manheim Station” — both perfect examples of its songwriting and sound.
The collaboration of writer-vocalist team Shane Walker and Jamie Wilson keeps on coming up with eloquent lyrics that evoke the true Americana spirit (a la alt-country pioneers Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris). Add bass player Cody Foote and drummer/percussionist John Ross Silva, who mastered the WEATHERVANE recording, and what listeners get are meaty songs blending conscientious messages and great sound.
