'COUNTRYBILLY' COMBO TWO TONS OF STEEL
PLAYS NEW & OLD VENUES AROUND D-FW
(Austin, Texas) – In the Texas "countrybilly" combo Two Tons of Steel, the slap on the upright bass, the twang of guitars, hot drum beats and the sweet whine of pedal steel evoke the classic sound. But listen carefully, and it's certain: With a little twist, the band has created a retro sound of its own.
For instance, "Vegas," Two Tons' first single from its latest album of the same name, rocks a country beat but carries a Latino trumpet. Band frontman Kevin Geil's swinging tune tells of love between husband and wife, but it’s not your typical love story. In 22 weeks, the single has climbed as high as #7 on the Americana Chart and #4 on The Texas Music Chart.
Two Tons of Steel returns to North Texas next month, bringing the chart-climbing single and other hits from VEGAS (Palo Duro, July 2005), for three shows and a record in-store appearance in Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton.
On Thursday, January 12, the band plays a 10:30 p.m. show presented by 96.7 The Twister at Firewater Bar & Grill, 10261 Technology Blvd. in Dallas. Cover is complimentary; information at 214.352.5700. At 10:30 p.m. Friday, January 13, it’s a show at Dan's Silverleaf, 103 Industrial in Denton. Cover is $8; information at 940.320.2000
Two Tons plays an in-store performance at 3 p.m. Saturday, January 14, at Bill's Records, 8118 Spring Valley Road, Dallas, 972.234.1496. Then, at 10:30 p.m. that night, the band plays the White Elephant Saloon, 106 E. Exchange Ave., Fort Worth. Cover is $8; information at 817.624.8273.
"With shades of everything real about rock 'n’ roll, paired to the sensibilities of country, mixed into a twang blend of thigh-slapping enjoyment, these guys … easily claim a nod as a band to watch," says George Peden of Australia’s Country Stars Online. Two Tons’ cover of The Ramones' "I Want to be Sedated” is part-genius, part-new classic.
Two Tons lead singer Geil, Dennis Fallon (electric guitar, harmonica), Ric Ramirez (upright bass, harmony vocals), Chris Dodds (drums, harmony vocals) and Texas Steel Guitar Hall of Famer Denny Mathis (also on dobro) have created a new Texas music that combines traditional rockabilly and a heady rock ‘n’ roll beat for a new sound altogether.
Palo Duro Records' CD-DVD release in spring 2006, TWO TONS OF STEEL … LIVE AT GRUENE HALL, aims to honor fans of the 10-year-old summer ritual known as the "Two Ton Tuesday" music series at the oldest dance hall in Texas. The band also is planning another European tour for next year; dates are March 9-20.
